I built TurtleType with a simple goal: to create a clean, distraction-free space where anyone can learn touch typing and test their keyboard speed completely free of charge.

Why the Name "TurtleType"? 🐢

We’ve all heard the timeless fable: "Slow and steady wins the race."

When people try to increase their typing speed, the most common trap is rushing. Hitting keys frantically leads to repeated typos, constant backspacing, and broken rhythm. In reality, that’s the slowest way to type.

Genuine speed comes from rhythm, accuracy, and muscle memory. When you slow down just enough to maintain 98%+ accuracy, your fingers naturally internalize the layout. Once accuracy becomes second nature, speed accelerates on its own. That is the core philosophy of TurtleType: precision first, speed follows.

On TurtleType, keyboard practice is immediately accessible to everyone:

• Zero Forced Signups: You can practice, test your speed, and learn touch typing without creating an account. Open the site and start typing right away.
• Offline & Local-First: Your settings, themes, and personal best scores are saved directly on your device via your browser's localStorage. It keeps working smoothly even if your internet connection drops.
• Optional Leaderboards: For typists who love competition and want to showcase their scores on global leaderboards, an optional account option is available to record official rankings. Core practice, however, remains 100% free and open to everyone without login.

Many typing tests online calculate speed with arbitrary rules that don't match formal examinations. TurtleType calculates speed strictly according to recognized international typographic standards:

With TurtleType, my mission is to take that clean minimalist spirit and tailor it with a dedicated focus on students, exam preparation, structured touch-typing lessons, and accessible offline practice.

What's Coming Next (The Roadmap)

TurtleType is continuously growing. Here is what is currently in development:

• Touch Typing Academy: Interactive lessons starting from the Home Row (ASDF JKL;) guiding beginners step-by-step through top and bottom rows without looking at the keys.
• Timed Paragraph Tests: 1-minute, 3-minute, 5-minute, and 10-minute continuous paragraph typing to build endurance and exam readiness.
• Country & Exam Curricula: Dedicated practice sections configured specifically for regional exam standards (such as Indian SSC CGL/CHSL typing criteria, US Civil Service standards, and international certifications).
